It truly is the season to smile with a new Smilezone installed at the Northeast Cancer Centre of Health Sciences North/Horizon Sante-Nord in Sudbury last weekend!

The Smilezone was installed within the centre’s Pediatric Oncology Unit, refreshing the space to create a bright, cheerful atmosphere for children to enjoy! The clinic’s entrance and hallway, waiting room, and treatment rooms were all transformed; including features such as: iPad stations, beautiful murals, new cabinetry, framed celebrity hockey jerseys, and a fun, colourful space radiating positivity!

The Pediatric Oncology Unit at the Northeast Cancer Centre of Health Sciences North/Horizon Santé-Nord provides chemotherapy and post-treatment follow-up for children with cancer up to the age of 18.  There have been over 1000 patient visits to the Unit, and 30 admissions to hospital. Once a child has completed a course of treatment, the Pediatric Oncology Unit provides five years of follow-up care.

In the Words of Steffany Bourque, Manager of Systematic Treatments at the Northeast Cancer Centre:

“This Smilezone space is going to allow kids to be kids when they come here, and just for a moment have a distraction from their treatment. To see a sick child smile is priceless, even the adults smile in this space!”

The new Zone was also largely supported by The Sudbury Wolves Hockey Club and its Owners. Generously, donating their jerseys for display in the Zone, attending the Opening ceremony, and Mark Burgess, owner of the Sudbury Wolves, gave a $10, 000 donation to the Smilezone Foundation on behalf of the Burgess and Edwards Families.

Mark Burgess also added this final statement that made everyone at our Foundation smile:

“The Sudbury Wolves and the Burgess and Edward families are humbled to have this opportunity to support such a wonderful Foundation. The Wolves, along with the Mackenzie’s and Foligno’s, have always given back to the community and what a great project to support! Our team and its players will continue to show support for the Smilezone Foundation and the Northeast Cancer Centre with continued visits as we move forward”
